Silver award recipient of IBPA's prestigious Benjamin Franklin book award in the category of psychology, "Losing Dad, Paranoid Schizophrenia A Family's Search for Hope" is the compelling true story of a family's struggle with the sudden onset of their father’s severe mental illness after his fifty-third birthday. Lacking an understanding of his condition, Joseph’s family is left to deal with his upsetting transformation, which leads him across four continents and thirty countries as a self-proclaimed prophet-of-God, and his subsequent homelessness. The perspectives of his three children, his spouse, and his own distorted reality combine to offer readers a glimpse of a world that will either feel hauntingly familiar or dramatically eye-opening.
With so many recent tragedies involving individuals with untreated severe mental illness, families, doctors, and police are often blamed for not doing enough. The solution, however, is rarely simple. Losing Dad poignantly shows the effects of inadequate treatment for those living with a severe mental illness in America. Losing Dad not only features Joseph's harrowing -- and still ongoing -- flight from reality, but also valuable information about severe mental illness, a crippling disease that affects 1 in 17 people.
In the Foreword written by Xavier Amador,Ph.D., founder of the LEAP Institute and author of “I am Not Sick, I Don't Need Help!” (Vida Press 2012), Joseph’s mysterious condition “anosognosia” (a condition in which a person who suffers from a certain disability is unaware of the existence of that disability) is examined in greater detail.
Bonus Material Readers will also find in “Losing Dad” a helpful list of resources, a discussion of current U.S. mental health laws, exclusive in-depth interviews with several members of Joseph’s family, and discussion questions that are ideal for book clubs and reading circles.
A portion of author’s proceeds from sales of Losing Dad will go to NAMI-OC, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a nonprofit dedicated to improving lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.

As someone living with bipolar disorder who has family members also struggling with brain disorders, I greatly appreciate Amanda LaPera’s story about her father’s late onset schizophrenia. Untreated brain disorders and homelessness negatively affect family members and society as a whole. Lack of insight into one’s brain disorder and the need for help makes treating it challenging.Product details

Losing Dad Paranoid Schizophrenia A Family Search for Hope eBook Amanda LaPera Xavier Amador Reviews
As a mental health nurse I highly recommend this book for family's of patients with mental illness. Families tend to struggle with these diseases bc they can not be seen. Sometimes being a family member is harder than being the patient bc when u love someone u want to fix them and mental disorders are a life ling battle. Great read for family's and friends of people suffering with mental health issues.
An inspiring true story of tragedy and triumph, of loss and redemption. This book was amazing! I read it all in one sitting, I just couldnt put it down! Page after page of horrific ordeals, that no one could imagine ever facing. This woman is strong & beautiful and came out on top despite the trials and tribulations she had gone through. She has a great way with words and this story made me laugh out loud, and it made my mouth drop in horror. This book is a must read!!!
Wow, what an amazing story! How many times have I seen an obviously mentally ill person on the street and wondered about their situation? It's so interesting to get an inside glimpse at just one example of how someone ended up there. It could happen to any of us and the anguish of the family as they realize how powerless they are to help their ill loved one is something I hadn't much considered before. This is a very well written book and an important story.
This is an excellent read. The author has such a way with words that you almost feel that you are a part of the story. You want to find some way to help the family. You feel their frustration when they find out just how seriously ill their father has been for sometime and they didn't even know it. Their anger and disbelief that it was happening to their father. You MUST read the book to find out the whole story. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I was fortunate enough to receive an AUTOGRAPHED HARD COVER EDITION from the author herself.
I'm actually more of a science fiction/adventure story kind of person, but I found this book very well-written. On a few occasions I found myself staying up till midnight or later because I wanted to see what happened next! Having worked in an office with an individual with early stages of paranoid schizophrenia, it brought back some of my memories of being accused of trying to 'sabotage their success.' The accusations seemed so out of left field. I hope Ms. LaPera much success in her crusade to bring this 'street' illness to the limelight.
This book validated my life. I am currently experiencing the same thing with losing my dad to senility, and the book really took me home. The tales written in the book are so similar to my ordeal that I cried on the inside. This book is absolutely a buy. Certainly there were some hilarious moments in the book, because the elderly can be funny in the things they do. Please read this book!!
This book clearly shows the heart breaking dilemma of love ones who try to get help for a mentally ill member. It gives good insight and I
Would recommend this book to anyone who faces this sorrow. Elaine Stafford
